Masayuki Miyajima will return to the Dublin Arts Council gallery to close the 2016 Visual Arts Series with a solo exhibition of functional Japanese ceramic artwork. Miyajima will exhibit elegant handcrafted stoneware and porcelain objects, carved and inlayed with a variety of colored patterns.

Miyajima will travel to Dublin from the town of Motegi, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. His studio and kiln are situated just outside of Mashiko, where for more than 20 years Miyajima has explored shape and material to produce pottery imbued with a combination of body, mind and spirit. The whole of the object is important, as is its functionality. Miyajima is a former apprentice of Shimaoka Tatsuzo, who was designated a “Living National Treasure” by the Japanese government.

The cities of Dublin, Ohio and Mashiko, Japan signed a Friendship Cities declaration in December of 2015. The partnership marks Dublin’s first official international cultural exchange, through which Dublin and Mashiko will participate in exchanges in areas such as education, local government, business or the arts.

Miyajima’s pottery has proven itself extremely popular with patrons, becoming the best-selling artwork in Dublin Arts Council’s history during his 2010 and 2013 solo exhibitions.
